From the component’s name I could easily tell which Engine, Gearbox, or Chassis belongs to which generation. Yeah, the year really helps, as sometimes I would create new Generations of my Vehicles. I also tend to design a new Engine, Gearbox, and Chassis every year or two in the early stages of the game so that my RnD team can get better without me having to pay a large sum of money every month for them to improve. To answer your question, I tend to prefix my components as when I sometimes go to the “view” or “modify” tab and view my components, I can easily find the Engine, Gearbox, or Chassis I’m looking for as each tab has components separately, unless you view the whole vehicle, you’ll be able to see the components grouped together. That's better than just "gen4" or whatever and I like the idea of being able to see how old it is just from the name. I think I will take your methodology for incorporating the year designed, though. As I make new versions over the years I'll just increment the generation, as I generally want to use the latest generation in any new designs.

For engines I will generally do something like "Flat6 Gen1", for chassis I will do "Ladder Gen1" or "Ladder Truck Gen1". I use a more generic naming convention that does get me into trouble sometimes. The only ones I separate out are for racing / race cars and trucks / vans. Also interesting that you have a classification for things like a "touring" gearbox - generally gearboxes, engines and chassis (especially early on) are pretty multi-purpose for me (I try to re-use them across multiple products). Interesting - do you need the prefix for engine, gearbox, and chassis? Generally if you're designing a car, going to modify components, etc, they are already grouped together. This helps me a lot when identifying my components, if you think you have a better way of naming components please share! For instance, if I’m naming fan engine I just designed, this is how I would go about naming it:ĭW stands for Double Wishbone with the left one being the front wheel. The way I name my components depend on the component itself.

I think I have found a good way to name components if you’re having trouble naming yours.
